A great first half performance helped PSG win 4-0 Real Madrid and move on to the Club World Cup final.
At MetLife Stadium, Real Madrid was easily defeated by the European champions. On Sunday, they will go back to play Chelsea in the big game.
First Half Dominance: Three Goals in 24 Minutes
In the first Twenty-four minutes, Fabian Ruiz and Ousmane Dembele did most of the damage as Madrid’s defence fell apart.
Thibaut Courtois had just made two saves in quick succession, stopping Fabian and then Dembele. He couldn’t do much to stop PSG’s first goal in the sixth minute.
Courtois had taken Dembele out with a sprawling dive, and Fabian was there to tuck into an empty net.
Three minutes later, Dembele took advantage of Antonio Rudiger’s disastrous mistake and slotted home to make it 2-0.
Against his old team, Kylian Mbappe had his first chance to score, but PSG quickly overtook him and made it 3-0 when Fabian scored his second after Achraf Hakimi squared the ball.
Second Half Action: Ramos Seals Historic Win
Early in the second half, Desire Doue was denied by the offside flag. Even though Madrid gained momentum, it never seemed likely that they would pull off a stunning comeback, and Goncalo Ramos’ outstanding late goal sealed Xabi Alonso’s first loss as Los Blancos manager.
Historical Context: Madrid’s Record Defeat
The first few minutes of Wednesday’s match reminded me of the Champions League final, where PSG repeatedly outscored Inter.
For the first time since they gave up two goals against Valencia in February 2017, Madrid gave up two goals in the first nine minutes of a match.
As PSG took a three-goal lead after 24 minutes of play for the first time since April 2018, Dembele became the first player to be involved in two goals against Madrid in the first nine minutes of a game in any competition since at least the 2002–03 season.
Statistical Analysis: PSG’s Dominance By Numbers
PSG has now won their last five knockout round games across all competitions by an overall score of 18-0, finishing with 2.52 expected goals compared to Madrid’s 0.71.
