With a convincing USA 3-0 victory against Guinea on Tuesday, the USMNT advanced to the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics. They haven’t advanced to the tournament’s last eight since the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

Mihailović Spectacular Free-Kick

With a curling free-kick from the edge of the box in the 14th minute, midfielder Đorđe Mihailović opened the score at an almost empty Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.

Paredes Double Secures Victory

In order to guarantee that the USA would enter the knockout stage after a 24-year wait, Kevin Paredes added two goals on each side of the half.

In the 31st minute, the left-winger scored his first goal by slamming the ball past goalkeeper Soumaïla Sylla following a breakaway move down the right. On the 75th minute, he added another goal, curling in a cross from fullback Jack McGlynn. With the two goals, Paredes became the first male American athlete to score twice at the Olympics since Rick Davis did it in 1984.

USMNT Road to the Knockout Stage

The US performed far better in the following two group games after losing the opening match against the favorites France. They dominated New Zealand 4-1 before playing Guinea in the intense heat and putting on their most comprehensive display of the competition.

Quarter-Finals Await

In Group A, the USA came in second place behind France, who on Tuesday defeated New Zealand 3-0. Morocco will be the next opponent the USA faces in Paris on Friday in the quarterfinals.
