Thiago Almada Joins Atletico Madrid in €21m Transfer

Thiago Almada

Atletico Madrid has officially made their third addition during this summer’s transfer period by bringing in Thiago Almada from Botafogo.

Atletico Madrid’s Busy Transfer Window Continues

Atletico Madrid has had a hectic few weeks as they finalized several new player signings. Earlier this month, they brought in Alex Baena and Matteo Ruggeri. Now, they are also set to add Johnny Cardoso to the team soon. In addition, they’ve recently made a significant move to sign a player named Almada.

Thiago Almada Signs Five-Year Atletico Madrid Deal

A 24 year old player, who spent last season playing for Lyon on loan, has signed a 5 year deal with Atletico. The team announced the agreement on Tuesday.

Atlético de Madrid and Botafogo F.R. have reached an agreement for the transfer of Thiago Almada, a 24 year old Argentine soccer player. He will be traveling to Madrid soon to have a medical check-up and then officially sign his contract to complete the deal.

According to Matteo Moretto, Atletico Madrid will spend €21 million to acquire half of Almada’s rights. There may also be conditions in the deal that let the club gradually buy out a sell-on clause that Botafogo is keeping as part of this agreement.

Almada has joined the RiyadhAir Metropolitano team, adding to a strong group of Argentine players that already includes Diego Simeone, his son Giuliano, and Julian Alvarez. However, his signing raises some questions because Atletico Madrid has already signed Baena, who plays a similar style.

Tactical Change: Almada as Correa Replacement?

Almada might be viewed as a suitable replacement for Angel Correa, who recently left Atletico Madrid to join Tigres. Almada is skilled at supporting the main striker, which could lead coach Simeone to adjust the team’s formation to a 4-4-1-1 instead of the traditional 4-4-2 whenever he plays. This could change the way the team attacks and defends during games.

In addition to Almada and Cardoso, Atlético Madrid is looking to bring in a new central defender. They’ve decided not to pursue Cristian Romero anymore. With their recent deal with Botafogo now finalized, there may be less money available to acquire a top defender.
