FIFA faced criticism after Donald Trump hinted that he might relocate games away from Boston, specifically from Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, unless the city improves its situation.

“At all FIFA events around the world, the main focus is on safety and security. A spokesperson from FIFA stated that it’s the responsibility of governments to ensure public safety and to make decisions that are in the best interest of everyone.”

Boston Mayor’s Response to Trump’s World Cup Threat
Earlier today, Boston’s mayor, Michelle Wu, suggested that the city is prepared to confront former President Trump about his statement that he could tell FIFA to take the World Cup games away from Boston.
“Many agreements are in place that prevent any one person, even someone living in the White House, from making changes on their own,” Wu explained. “We’re living in a time where there is a lot of pressure, challenges, and ongoing threats directed at people and communities that stand up against or refuse to follow a harmful agenda.”
“We’re going to stay true to ourselves, even if it means having difficult discussions that focus on the values of Boston. We’re committed to standing strong for what Boston represents.”
2026 World Cup Host Cities and Trump’s Statements
The United States will be hosting 78 out of 104 matches in the 2026 World Cup, which will feature 48 teams for the first time. FIFA has not made any statements regarding the cities or stadiums that were mentioned by Trump.
On Tuesday, Trump was asked about the violence that occurred in South Boston, which included a police car being set on fire. He responded by saying that if he believed someone was not doing their job properly and if he felt that the situation was unsafe, he would reach out to Gianni, the head of FIFA, who he praised as amazing. Trump mentioned that he would suggest moving the event to a different location, and he believes they would do just that.
“He might not enjoy doing it, but he could do it without any trouble.”

The United States, Mexico, and Canada will all be in North America when the 2026 FIFA World Cup takes place.
