Liverpool named Martín Zubimendi of Real Sociedad their first major summer signing. It is believed that the winner of Euro 2024 with Spain, who reportedly has a £51 million release clause, is considered a strong candidate to play defensive midfield.

Strengthening the Midfield Position

Ever since Fabinho left 12 months ago, that position has needed strengthening. Liverpool acquired Wataru Endo, a Japan international, from Stuttgart towards the end of the transfer window for a reported £16 million. Although they had missed out on a few other targets, they only considered the 31-year-old a short-term solution.

Alexis Mac Allister and Endo’s Roles

Alexis Mac Allister played as a No. 6 for much of the previous season, and Liverpool turned down a £12 million offer for Endo from Marseille last month. The 25-year-old Martín Zubimendi signing would be the first significant business for Richard Hughes, the new sporting director. Hughes stated last month that August would see “a crescendo” of transfer activity, but July would be quiet due to continuing international tournaments.

Tim Ream’s Move to Charlotte FC

Tim Ream of Fulham, a defender who spent nine years with the team and made 312 appearances, second only to Tom Cairney in the twenty-first century, has joined MLS team Charlotte FC. “My time at Fulham was more than special because of the memories I made, the connections I made, and the people I met along the way,” the 36-year-old said.

Alejo Véliz’s Loan to Espanyol

Alejo Véliz, a striker for Tottenham, spent the second half of the previous season on loan at Sevilla. He has now joined Espanyol on loan for the current campaign.
