Nottingham Forest advanced to the FA Cup quarter-finals by defeating fellow Premier League side Ipswich Town on penalties, following a 1-1 draw after extra time during the match at the City Ground on Monday.
Following nine successful penalties, Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels leapt in the correct direction to deny Jack Taylor’s shot, helping his team advance with a score of 5-4.
Quarter-Final Fixture Confirmed
Forest will compete against Brighton and Hove Albion in an away match for the quarter-finals.
George Hirst put Ipswich ahead in the second half with a header amid a group of players, but Forest equalized when Anthony Elanga’s curling cross found Ryan Yates to head it in.
Extra-Time Struggle and Sels Heroics
Callum Hudson-Odoi struck the crossbar for Forest soon after as they gained control, but Ipswich managed to withstand the pressure, extending the match into 30 minutes of dull extra time.
Sels then created the distinction with an essential save, securing Forest’s place in their second FA Cup quarter-final in four years.
Sels Reflects on Shootout Success
The game was not so good. In the end extra time is a gamble, you don’t want to gamble too much, Sels, whose save helped Forest beat Exeter City on penalties in the previous round, told ITV Sport.
I’m glad I was able to assist the team in advancing to the next round. It was the sole penalty where I dove in the correct direction. In penalty situations, one of the goalkeepers is destined to become the hero.
“I am happy. Looking forward to the weekend now.”
