Real Madrid defeated Deportivo Alaves 3-2 at home on Tuesday in La Liga, overcoming a late scare thanks to goals from Lucas Vazquez, Kylian Mbappe, and Rodrygo.
Alaves’ goals came from Carlos Benavidez and Kike Garcia in the 88th and 89th minutes, but Real Madrid hung on to win a game they had mostly dominated.
Alaves’ Late Comeback Attempt
With 17 points, Real is one point behind leaders Barcelona in the La Liga rankings. On Wednesday, Real will play Getafe, who is currently in second place.
A little more than a minute after kickoff, Vinicius Jr. of Real Madrid opened the goal when he sprinted up the left channel after taking a long ball from Federico Valverde and found fullback Vazquez, who scored from close range.
Real Madrid Performance and Key Players
With Vinicius, Mbappe, and Bellingham posing a constant threat to their opponents, the champions produced an excellent performance after a rough start to the season.
In the 22nd minute, Mbappe fired one goal into the net, but it was ruled out for offside.
Real continued to control play throughout the first half, and they increased their lead in the 40th minute when Mbappe and Bellingham executed a beautiful one-two before Mbappe cut inside and finished well to the right of the goalkeeper.
Three minutes after the half, Rodrygo scored Real’s third goal, finishing off a swift counterattack with a low shot under the goalkeeper’s legs, giving Real the impression that they would win easily.
Benavidez and Garcia both took advantage of some poor defending to bring Alaves back into the game, but their comeback was too late to keep Real Madrid from winning all three points.
Reaction from Real Madrid Camp
“We gave a great performance throughout the match, so it’s unfortunate that it ended the way it did,” Real Madrid TV’s captain Vazquez said.
“We were pleased with the victory because, up until the 88th minute, we played a fantastic game. However, two careless mistakes cost us two goals, making us suffer a little bit more than we ought to have.
Upcoming Matches and La Liga Standings
With the game we had played, we didn’t deserve this outcome, but let’s see the bright side: we did a lot of things right.
On Sunday, Real Madrid will play their much-awaited derby against Atletico Madrid.
