England’s interim manager Lee Carsley has ruled out Phil Foden, Ollie Watkins, and Cole Palmer from the first matches.

The runners-up in Euro 2024 will play their first match without Gareth Southgate on Saturday against the Republic of Ireland, then three days later at Wembley against Finland.

Carsley’s Squad Selection Impacted by Withdrawals

For this month’s Nations League doubleheader, Carsley, who was hired on a temporary basis, named a 26-man squad; however, three players withdrew from his England selection.

FA Statement on Player Withdrawals

The Football Association released a statement stating that Phil Foden, Ollie Watkins, and Cole Palmer would not be participating in England’s upcoming Uefa Nations League fixtures.

Reasons Behind the Withdrawals

“On Tuesday, the Three Lions team arrived at St George’s Park. However, after being evaluated, Palmer and Watkins went back to their respective clubs to complete their recovery from persistent problems. Due to illness, Foden could not report and will not play in the matches against Finland and the Republic of Ireland. There are currently no plans for any more additions.

England’s Transition After Southgate’s Departure

Only fifty-five days have passed since Southgate’s team narrowly lost the European Championship final for the second time in a row when England travels to the Aviva Stadium. Soon after the 2-1 loss to Spain in Berlin, the manager announced the end of his eight-year tenure. England Under-21s coach Carsley stepped in to take over as manager while the FA looked for a long-term replacement.

New Faces in Carsley’s First England Squad

The 50-year-old former Republic of Ireland player will take charge of all six Nations League matches this autumn.

Carsley’s eye-catching first pick included Noni Madueke, Morgan Gibbs-White, Tino Livramento, and Angel Gomes, who received their first senior calls. Harry Maguire and Jack Grealish return from missing Euro 2024, although Jude Bellingham and Luke Shaw are out due to injury.
