Fabian Schar late equaliser forced the Premier League leaders to settle for an exciting 3-3 draw at Newcastle on December 4, bringing Liverpool seven-game winning streak to a dramatic end.

Salah Double Almost Secures Victory

Mohamed Salah’s second goal of the game in the closing minutes put Arne Slot’s team within seconds of securing yet another victory in a fantastic start to the season.

However, Schar punished a mistake by Liverpool keeper Caoimhin Kelleher, in keeping with a testing evening on Tyneside.

Alexander Isak Stunning Opener

Newcastle had taken the lead thanks to a rocket from Alexander Isak in the first half, but Curtis Jones tied the score shortly after the half.

Anthony Gordon Restores Newcastle Lead

Before Salah’s double put him at 15 goals this season across all competitions, including nine in his last seven league games, Anthony Gordon put Newcastle back ahead.

Liverpool lead at the top of the table is now down to seven points after dropping points for the first time since a 2-2 draw at Arsenal on October 27.

Following their thrilling 2-0 victories over Real Madrid and Manchester City last week, Slot’s team was hailed as England champions-elect and a strong candidate for the Champions League.

Slot will have identified the weaknesses in his injury-plagued defence prior to the Merseyside derby against Everton on December 7 at Goodison Park, but failing to defeat a determined Newcastle won’t alter that standing.

Newcastle’s relentless high press surprised Liverpool, who had won 18 of their 21 games this season.

Despite their inconsistent start, Liverpool was unable to be totally contained, and Nick Pope made a great save on Alexis Mac Allister’s long-range attempt.

Moments later, Mac Allister came within inches of the first goal once more with a low drive that struck the outside of the post.

Liverpool Defensive Vulnerabilities

Liverpool was still remarkably exposed at the back without the rested Trent Alexander-Arnold and the injured Ibrahima Konate. This was made clear when Jacob Murphy struck a hard shot off the far post from a sharp angle.

Alexander Isak Shines Once Again

Isak opened the scoring in the 35th minute, but Liverpool ignored the warning.

Isak took a clever touch to misdirect Virgil van Dijk 20 yards from goal after charging into Lewis Hall’s pass, creating space for a blistering strike that flashed into the net’s roof.

Missed Opportunities for Newcastle

Following Joe Gomez poor clearance, Gordon had a chance to double Newcastle lead, but his hesitant shot went straight to Kelleher.

Another Gomez error allowed Murphy to blast narrowly wide, leaving Liverpool ragged and Slot throwing his arms up in frustration.

Jones Sparks Liverpool Comeback

However, five minutes after halftime, Liverpool quickly came up with an equaliser.

Salah, who had been quiet during the first half, came alive with a beautifully timed cross to Jones, who ran in time to meet the Egyptian delivery with a forceful close-range finish.

Gordon and Salah Continue the Back-and-Forth

After 62 minutes, Isak clever pass sent Gordon charging into the area, cutting back inside before putting in a calm finish from 10 yards out past Kelleher to put Newcastle ahead again.

However, Slot choice to bring on Alexander-Arnold and the presence of the outstanding Salah helped Liverpool maintain their resolve.

Salah Second Goal Brings Hope

After setting up Liverpool first goal, Salah finished a flowing move with an instinctive close-range shot from Alexander-Arnold cross to tie the score in the 68th minute.

In the 83rd minute, the visitors believed they had stolen the points, but it was actually the signal for a late Liverpool siege.

Fabian Schar Late Equaliser Breaks Liverpool Hearts

They were patiently probing the area’s edge and jumped when Alexander-Arnold slipped a pass to Salah, who finished with his usual flair.

But there was a painful twist to the story for Liverpool in the 90th minute when Schar slid in to poke the loose ball into the net after Kelleher misjudged a cross completely.
