Craig Shakespeare, the former Leicester manager, has died at the age of 60, prompting tributes. Shakespeare, who received a cancer diagnosis last year, had numerous roles during his coaching career, including serving as Claudio Ranieri’s assistant during Leicester’s surprising Premier League victory in 2015-2016.

Career and Contributions

After the club sacked the Italian the following season, Shakespeare took over as manager for less than a season before leaving. He was Sam Allardyce’s assistant during his one-game tenure as England manager, and he has also coached at Hull, Watford, Aston Villa, Norwich, and Everton, after playing for Walsall, Sheffield Wednesday, West Brom, Grimsby, and Scunthorpe.

Family’s Statement

The League Managers’ Association (LMA) published a statement from Craig Shakespeare’s family, saying, “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Craig Shakespeare, ‘Shakey’.”

“Craig passed away peacefully this morning in his home, surrounded by his family. While we are extremely proud of his football achievements as both a player and a coach, he will always be first and foremost a beloved and adored husband, father, son, brother, and uncle to us.

“The loss is heartbreaking for all of us, and we kindly request privacy during this incredibly difficult time as we attempt to process and grieve the loss of a very special person.”

Craig’s family also want to express their deep gratitude for the people’s outpouring prayers and good wishes during these past challenging months. And even though they couldn’t respond to every one of them, the family wants to that your kind thoughts were deeply appreciated.

Tributes and Recognitions

Shakespeare was referred to as “an inspirational figure in our history” by Leicester City in a post on X. Before taking over as manager and guiding us to the Champions League quarterfinals, Craig played a key role in our ascent from League 1 to Premier League winners. Shakey, rest in peace.

Shakespeare was honored by LMA chairman Martin O’Neill, who oversaw Leicester from 1995 to 2000. Players, coaches, and managers within the game often spoke about Craig’s impact on the people he worked with, he added.

“Not only did Craig have extensive knowledge of football and coaching, but his charisma and friendliness made individuals feel important and that he genuinely cared about their development and success.

It is important to recognize the contribution Craig made to the success of his teams, particularly at Leicester City, where he was a key player in that incredible Premier League winning season as well as many other amazing moments during his three spells at the club.

Messages from Players

Shakespeare’s Leicester teammate Jamie Vardy tweeted: “I don’t have the words right now.” Just gutted. Shakey, RIP.

Jack Grealish, who worked with Craig Shakespeare at Aston Villa, described him as “one of the greatest people I’ve ever met, not only in football but also in life.” Last month, he texted me after I didn’t make the Euros squad while he was sick, demonstrating the sort of man he was! A genuine heart of gold! Absolutely devastated.”
