Bundesliga team Heidenheim secured their position in the top flight with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Elversberg in the second leg of the relegation playoff on Monday, thanks to Leo Scienza’s goal deep into stoppage time.
After battling back to secure a 2-2 draw at home in the first leg, Heidenheim, who finished 16th in the Bundesliga, managed to edge out a determined Elversberg, who have yet to compete in the top flight, by a close 4-3 on aggregate.
Honsak Fires Heidenheim Ahead Early in Decider
Mathias Honsak put Heidenheim in the lead just nine minutes into the match, skillfully capitalizing on a well-timed through ball from Scienza, who had made an impressive run forward after regaining possession in midfield.
Elversberg equalized in the 31st minute, following an impressive run by Tom Zimmerschied. He skillfully assisted Captain Robin Fellhauer, who confidently placed the ball into the net past the goalkeeper.
