The Football Association is looking into a video shared on social media that seemingly captures Premier League referee David Coote making disparaging remarks about Liverpool and their ex-manager, Jurgen Klopp.

On November 11, the Referees’ body Professional Game Match Officials declared that they placed 42-year-old Coote on leave while conducting an extensive investigation.

FA Review of Remarks

The Football Association is currently reviewing Coote’s remarks. It’s believed that a portion of its inquiry will focus on whether Coote’s mention of Klopp’s nationality represents an aggravated violation of its misconduct regulations.

We are aware of the issue and are currently investigating it, an FA spokesman stated on November 12.

Details of the Video

Per the video, Coote, who officiated Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Aston Villa on November 9, characterized Klopp as “arrogant” and claimed he used inappropriate language.

Former Referee Mike Dean’s Comments

Former referee Mike Dean, who is now a pundit on television, thinks that the incident will negatively impact officials across English football.

During an interview with Sky Sports, the 56-year-old stated: “Referees must avoid putting themselves in that situation, regardless of the circumstances.”

You can converse with friends and coworkers in private, but you shouldn’t let someone record it and then expect it won’t get shared.

Background on the Video’s Content

The video seems to be about a 1-1 match between Burnley and Liverpool that Coote officiated in July 2020. The league had already crowned Liverpool champions.

Klopp expressed his disapproval of Coote following the match, stating that the referee had been excessively forgiving regarding Burnley’s challenges.

Klopp’s Departure and Past Criticism

Klopp departed from Liverpool at the conclusion of the previous season after almost nine years leading the team at Anfield.

The German expressed criticism of Coote regarding a situation in a previous match against Arsenal, where Martin Odegaard’s hand touched the ball.

Controversial VAR Decisions

As VAR, David Coote did not suggest that Chris Kavanagh, the on-field official, look into the incident.

David Coote served as the VAR during the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park in Oct 2020, where Everton’s goalkeeper Jordan Pickford caused a season-ending injury to Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk.

The officials did not dismiss Pickford for the tackle and gave no subsequent punishment, as FA regulations only apply if they miss an incident during the match or when assessed by VAR.
