Cristiano Ronaldo thinks that Erik ten Hag tactics are overly defensive, and he wants the Manchester United manager to set his sights on winning the Premier League, even though the club needs to “rebuild from the bottom.”
The star from Portugal, who is currently a member of Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, disagreed with Erik Ten Hag before his second stint at Old Trafford came to an end in late 2022.

Ronaldo thinks his previous team requires significant changes, but believes Ten Hag should still aim to win major trophies in the meantime.
The Dutchman stated that he is “quite confident” about winning more trophies this season, following the victories in the League Cup and FA Cup in the last two seasons.
But he stated in July that his team is “far from ready” to win the Premier League, a title they haven’t clinched since Alex Ferguson’s final season in charge in 2013.
Ronaldo Comments on Rebuilding Manchester United
Ronaldo expressed his opinion about the need to reconstruct everything in Manchester during an episode of the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, which is scheduled for release on Sept 12.
“They say the Manchester United coach cannot compete to win the league and Champions League. You can’t say that you will not fight to win.”
“You have to think, ‘Listen, maybe we don’t have that potential, but I can’t say that. We’re going to try. You have to try.”
Manchester United Current Performance and Future
Manchester United upset Manchester City in the FA Cup final in May. However, they had their worst Premier League campaign last season, finishing eighth. The 20-time English champions have already lost two of their opening three matches this season.
“This team needs time to redevelop since it is still one of the top clubs globally, but change is needed,” declared Ronaldo.
“They understand that this is the only way. That’s why they are starting to change again – the structure of the club, the president, the infrastructures, and everything, with the owners of the club.”
Jim Ratcliffe Role in Restructuring Manchester United
The acquisition of a minority stake in the club by British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe was finalized in February, and significant changes in the club’s leadership have been implemented by him following his assumption of control over football operations.
“I am optimistic about the future,” stated Ronaldo. “I have faith, but success is not solely reliant on individual talents. It encompasses the entire club, not just the players, but everything as a cohesive and unified whole.”
They need to start from scratch. Otherwise, they won’t be able to compete, which will be impossible.
Ronaldo, a recipient of the Ballon d’Or five times, had two different stints with Manchester United. He scored 27 goals in 54 matches during his return to Old Trafford after joining from Juventus in 2021.

Following his departure just over a year later, he claimed he felt “betrayed” and said of Ten Hag, “I don’t have respect for him because he doesn’t show respect for me.”
Although 39 years old, he still loves the club.
“I’m not happy with the way it all happened, but we cannot control certain aspects of our lives. It’s already done,” he said.
“It is no longer my concern to prove that I am right or wrong. I’ve said what I had to, and for me, it’s settled.”
He said, “I love that club. I’m not the type of guy to forget the past.”
